Introduction

The Center for Social Justice (CSJ), a nonprofit organization, has launched the Social Justice Scholarship for Community Empowerment to support students of color who are interested in social justice work. The scholarship will provide funding to help students attend the CSJ’s annual summer institute and participate in leadership development training. The goal is to increase diversity within the field of social justice and empower individuals by developing leadership skills through this unique opportunity created by CSJ.

Social Justice Scholarship for Community Empowerment

The Social Justice Scholarship for Community Empowerment is a $2,500 scholarship offered to undergraduate students of color who are interested in pursuing careers as social justice activists. Applicants must be:

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited college or university
  • A person of color (African American/Black, Asian Pacific Islander American, Hispanic/Latino(a), Native American/Alaska Native)

The deadline for this scholarship is January 15th annually.

You are eligible to apply if you:

  • Are a student of color, and
  • Plan to pursue a degree in social justice-oriented fields (e.g., education, law, human rights) at an accredited college or university in the United States.

It is intended to support undergraduate students whose background, life experiences and career aspirations reflect the mission of the Center for Social Justice.

We’re looking for students who have demonstrated an interest in social justice and community empowerment. You should be passionate about helping others, whether that means volunteering at a local shelter or organizing workshops on how to improve your community’s environment. The scholarship is open to all majors except those that focus on business or law (e.g., economics or political science). We want to encourage people from all fields who want to make the world better through service-oriented work.

Applicants should submit a 500-word essay explaining why they are interested in this area of study and what their long term goals are once they graduate college. Applicants may also submit one letter of recommendation from their professor or advisor; however this is optional so don’t worry if you don’t have anyone willing/able to write one!
